BIOINFORMATICS 2 Day's WORKSHOP 2011

This special workshop features hands-on sessions that will introduce participants to the basic principles and practices of bioinformatics.  Upon completion participants will have a working knowledge of the methods, tools and databases commonly used in the genomics field.

Date: Saturday & Sunday
Time: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Location: (DLI Training & Research Center), #3-4-874/1/A/5, 2nd Floor, Times Square, Barkatpura,  Hyderabad-500 027.

Cost: 1500 Rs

(DAY-1) 10:00 - 10:30, Introductory Address

(DAY-1) 10:30 - 01:00, SESSION 1: Investigating Proteins: A Bioinformatics Approach

Description: Understanding how proteins assemble, fold, and function within cells is a fundamental concept in biology. In these workshop we will see how bioinformatic tools can be used to explore not only the structure and function of proteins but also how comparative protein alignments provide evidence for molecular evolution.

Presenter: Manas, Associate Professor, Dept of Bioinformatics, DLI.

(DAY-1) 02:00 - 04:30, SESSION 2: All You Need to Teach Bioinformatics in the Classroom

Description: Whether you teach biology at the high school, community college, or undergraduate level, the tools you need to include bioinformatics in your lesson plan are probably already available to you. Here we’ll cover the basic tools for simple sequence searches and phylogenetics and how you can access them for free.

Presenter: Udaya, Associate Professor, Dept of Bioinformatics, DLI.

(DAY-2) 10:00 -01:00, SESSION 3: Bioinformatics and its Application in Agriculture

Description: This session will cover the brief introduction of bioinformatics and some useful databases for agricultural research. Then the session will focus on how to use these databases to accelerate our understanding of agriculture related problems and use it to improve agricultural production.

Presenter: Manas, Associate Professor, Dept of Bioinformatics, DLI.

(DAY-2) 02:00 - 04:30, SESSION 4: Building a Bioinformatics Database

Description: Ever wanted to know how a biological database works? This session will introduce the basic concepts of biological databases and how they’re used today. Instructions will be given for participants to build their own database during the hands-on exercise.
Presenter: Manas, Associate Professor, Dept of Bioinformatics, DLI.
